Gorditas Doña Tota is a chain restaurant out of Mexico that serves, you guessed it, gorditas, and just yesterday they opened their northern-most restaurant on Jefferson Boulevard in Oak Cliff. It all began more than 50 years ago when Carlota Murillo started selling her homemade street sandwiches out of a cart in Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas, and now there are more than 100 restaurants in Mexico and a handful in Texas.
The gorditas are served stuffed with one of 12 different stews, including pork mole, Yucatán-style chicken, beans and cheese and ground beef stew. Prices start at just $1.30 each. Reviews from down south generally have the same tone: very tasty, annoyingly addictive and dirt-cheap.
With so many locally owned Mexican favorites throughout the city, it will be interesting to see how this chain competes.
