The 107th game between Army and Navy takes place this Saturday at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, and who better to comment on the great gridiron battle than former Naval Academy QB — and, sure, Greatest Dallas Cowboys Quarterback Ever — Roger Staubach? He tells The Baltimore Examiner today that the first time he started against Army in 1962, “It’s the most nervous I’ve ever been before a game. There were 4,000 Midshipmen at Bancroft Hall counting on me to beat Army, and I knew it would be difficult to go back there that night if we lost.” So he didn’t: Navy won, 34-14, with Staubach throwing for two touchdowns and running for one. And Staubach, of course, took home the Heisman in 1963.
Staubach — who Navy coach Wayne Hardin once called “the greatest quarterback Navy ever had” — also says Army-Navy’s the biggest rivalry in sports. Yeah, bigger even than Cowboys-Redskins. Terrific piece. By all means, check it out. And hail Mary while you’re at it. –Robert Wilonsky
