Brace yourself—I have a shocking confession to make. You see, I’ve never read a single word written by David Sedaris—and I write for an alt-weekly. I’m sure he’s funny and all, but when everyone I knew was voraciously reading every one of his books a couple years back, I got so sick of hearing about it that I decided to write him off for the foreseeable future. This is also the reason why I’ve never watched the British version of The Office or seen one of the Harry Potter movies (well, that and the fact I’m not a giant nerd). I have to admit, though—the premise of The Santaland Diaries is pretty amusing, though pretty much anything involving someone in an elf costume is funny. (Sorry, elves. You guys are funny lookin’. No way around it.) The fact that the stage version plays yearly at half the community theaters in America, however, only strengthens my faith in the nobility of my Sedaris boycott. Don’t let me crap in your eggnog, though—those of you already under the Sedarispell will surely enjoy WaterTower Theatre’s production of The Santaland Diaries, playing Thursday through Sunday at the Addison Theatre Centre, 15650 Addison Road.
