Let’s talk about cell phones. The Dallas Contemporary Artspace hosts a “discussion” about one aspect of the cell phone in their new exhibit REAL TIME: mobile phone video. Pop culture, diaries, daily life and voyeurism are some of the topics addressed by contributions from inter.sect (a Dallas-based art collective), Kirsten Macy, Doreen Maloney, Marisa Olson, Marjorie & Ludwig, Leslie Sharpe and Bart Weiss. It will be interesting to see if the inherent graininess, blur and overall low-fidelity of the medium will be used to artistic advantage. More interesting though, is to see if the one big question, the one getting asked more and more by social networkers and perusers of user-generated content sites gets answered: “Who cares?” Assigning meaning to the inundation of information that is of questionable value or interest to anyone besides themselves (and their social circle) isn’t easy. But considering it has become as ubiquitous as the telephone poles and wires of the old infrastructure it is good that people continue to try.
