Standing with my hands over my head in the airport while security frisked me, I couldn’t help thinking it was a bad time for my relatives to start joking about how they were oh-so-obviously terrorists. But I love traveling, so I closed my eyes and thought of the soon departing plane. There are all kinds of arrival and departure experiences. Some are bittersweet–like say, a hug from that perfect guy you just met who’s moving across the country (of course)–while some fill you with sheer relief (remember standing just past airport security, waving at your family and feeling the same palpable joy that a mouse feels thundering in its ribs after escaping a hungry cat?). Artist John Pomara might know a thing or two about such things, but you can’t necessarily tell it from his new abstract exhibit, entitled Arrivals and Departures.
