Gordon Lightfoot is a Canadian folksinger who has had a number of hits in the charts, has penned several classic songs, and who I had never heard of until a couple of years ago. I’m not sure how that happened, but I don’t think I was alone in being able to sing along with almost every word of “If You Could Read My Mind” or the epic disaster song “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” without a clue as to who was actually singing those classics. I was sadly oblivious, despite the fact that those tunes have been a staple on radio for decades. A stint in a retail job that tortured its workers with a “soft rock” satellite radio meant that I heard those songs thousands and thousands of times over the course of several years. And I’m not complaining; Lightfoot has a gift for uplifting choruses and for penning lyrics that get in your head and stick there FOREVER, which is why I am pretty certain I’ll be running through “If You Could Read My Mind” a zillion times in the next few days. And if you’ve managed to sail through life without putting a name to Lightfoot’s music, you can get all caught up when he rolls through his catalog of songs at the Verizon Theatre, 1001 Performance Place in Grand Prairie, at 8 p.m. Thursday.
