Ever feel like you just can’t seem to get it together? That everyone around you knows what they’re doing with their lives and you don’t? That someone your age should have a career, a family and a plan? Yeah, I wouldn’t know about that either. But playwright Jonathan Larson does, and he wants to share the message that you can hold onto your lofty goals and dreams even though you and everyone else think it’s time to move on. After all, this is an autobiographical play and Lawson is the man who went on to write the groundbreaking Broadway smash Rent. The Uptown Players lend their skills to Larson’s other musical while telling the story of a young composer trying to make it big. Played by Joshua Doss, the composer is about to turn 30 but has yet to make his big break. His girlfriend (Courtney Franklin) thinks they should give up and move out of the city, and the success of his best friend (Cedric Neal) is making him think that he’s chosen the wrong career. All in all, the play covers ground familiar to many of us, with the happy ending we’re all looking for. Tick, tick…..BOOM! opens Friday and plays at 8 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays at the Kim Dawson Theatre in the Trinity Arts Center (2600 Stemmons Freeway) through July 1.
