In the world of American horror stories, Don Coscarelli is a king. The man behind the Phantasm series, Bubba Ho-Tep and The Beastmaster has been producing horror favorites for more than 30 years, and his latest film, John Dies at the End, is sure to join the list of classics. Based on the novel by David Wong (real name: Jason Pargin), John Dies at the End is a hallucinogenic trip through the minds of two college dropouts as they encounter the undead, a meat monster and some funky soy sauce. In honor of the film’s opening, the Texas Theatre (231 W. Jefferson Blvd.) is doubling the pleasure of local horror fans with a Coscarelli rock block on Thursday night. The evening will kick off with a screening of the original Phantasm in 35mm at 8 p.m., followed by John Dies at the End at 10 p.m. Tickets range $9.50 to $10.
