Cabela’s is hosting a YES event. That’s a Youth Education Seminar to you and me, and it’s the type of event one would expect from an outdoor outfitter. So, it will not feature riding in a pickup truck, hitting a bottle of whiskey and spotlighting deer, but it will “provide youth ages five years and up and their families with hands-on experience in the outdoors and outdoor sportsmanship.” This means archery, air rifle target shooting, and “shoot” and “don’t shoot” scenarios complete with hunter and firearm safety instruction. “Game Scene Investigation” participants will piece together the location and type of game animals in the area based on evidence left behind by cute little critters. Outdoor living skills will be taught by Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts; there will also be exhibits on wildlife history and management, replica skulls, pelts, tracks and more. The liberal media man in us wants to choose the “don’t shoot” scenario, but the kid as well as the manly man in us says, “Fire away.” The event is free to the public Saturday and Sunday at 12901 Cabela Drive in Fort Worth. Call 817-337-2400; visit cabelas.com or sci-foundation.org.
Sat., Sept. 16; Sun., Sept. 17
