There are galleries that you walk through without saying a word — those places where everything is curated within an inch of its life and the prevailing feeling is one of intimidation. Waxahachie’s Webb Gallery (209 W. Franklin St.) is about as far from that tone as you can get, bringing together folk art with “outsider” works to create visual experiences more lively than typical gallery fare. Moreover, it’s all housed in a friendly atmosphere that feels more funky thrift shop than gallery. Their latest exhibition is Roustabout, featuring paintings from a diverse group of artists including Tom Burleson, Ralph Pugay, Jackie Dunn Smith and Uncle Pete Drgac. Smith’s tattoo flash-style pieces would fit right in on your bass player’s bicep, while Burleson and Drgac’s work has a carefree art-brut sensibility. Portland’s Pugay further lightens the mood with his visually arresting, playful allegories. The opening reception 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday enhances the mirth with music by Shoot Low Sheriff.
