The first screening of Jaws took place at a Dallas shopping center. From these humble beginnings the film surpassed $100 million at the box office, a high-water mark never accomplished before that time. The film also went on to make a generation of kids (and probably a few adults) afraid of the deep end of the pool. Maybe it still does. While we’d like to recommend the NRH2O Family Water Park’s Dive-In Movies screening of Jaws, we can’t be sure if this is a family event or even one for people with active imaginations. The Spielberg feature was shot largely by hand-held camera on boats rocking on the sea, so showing this to an audience rolling in a wave pool definitely tops smell-o-vision for a visceral, immersive experience. It’s the imagination that gets most people, just as intended. Sure, the water at NRH2O is chlorinated and clear, but how many people will take a quick look down when Roy Scheider’s Chief Brody asks Richard Dreyfuss’ Hooper, “Is it true that most shark attacks take place in 3 feet of water?” Jaws begins at dusk Friday.
