There’s an artistic embarrassment of riches in the Dallas area — a huge helping of art galleries and collectives that make up the fabric of our art scene. On any given weekend, there’s a heaping handful of openings or receptions to hit up, featuring everything from photography to landscapes to mixed media. What makes Smoke and Mirrors Gallery (406 S. Haskell Ave.) different from all of these other galleries is its departure from those traditional categories — it’s not photography or landscapes or merely mixed media. It’s “outsider art,” or art produced outside of the conventions recognized by the art world. It’s raw, it’s largely free of the cultural norms that define cultural aesthetics and it makes for a hell of a show. On Sunday, it’s host to Technotarded, which marries the unconventional, often grotesque, images of street art from artist “Groserism” with the sounds of Dallas DJ collective Trackmeet. The product is a night that simultaneously challenges your ideas about art and moves you to dance with a pumping, bumpin’ soundtrack. The show opens at 6.
