Not unlike the infamous heroine of the 1982 Tommy Tutone earworm (we won’t even mention the name, it’s so relentlessly catchy), Dallas native Courtney Miles’ own telephonic ruminations focus on fame, though perhaps recognition of a different type. A self-professed “celebutant,” Miles has constructed an alter-ego for her exhibition, 214-808-5569, running through August 4 at Ross Akard Gallery. Per the artist’s luminous website, she claims to “appropriate that fifteen minutes of fame Warhol promised everyone else and thus ‘get the focus back on me where it belongs.’” Rounding out a three-month stint as artist-in-residence at the Fairmont, Miles uses photography, painting, video and installation to explore pop cultural obsessions with “fame, vanity, materialism and self-absorption.” Her works are a reaction to modern definitions of “reality” and “celebrity,” and Miles describes them as a “mixture of painting and performance art with a dash of neon.” Ross Akard Gallery is at 1717 N. Akard St. (within the Fairmont Hotel). Call 972-743-5895 or visit rossakard.com for more details.
Tuesdays-Saturdays, 11 a.m. Starts: July 18. Continues through Aug. 4, 2012
