Midnight Cowboy is required viewing. John Schlesinger’s 1969 drama about hustling and friendship won three Oscars and was nominated for four more (which it should have won), but shiny trophies aren’t why it should be seen. The character development created by Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman was truly unprecedented. Midnight Cowboy is a tough film to watch but damn, it’s amazing. The story of two desperate people in a struggle to survive while trying their best to hustle the shit out of 1960 New York City doesn’t make for a fun buddy flick (it’s also been called vaguely romantic), but it does make for a cinematic experience you can’t look away from. Become a film nerd for a night and see it on the big screen as part of D FrontRow’s Big Movie series. Showtime is at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Landmark Magnolia Theatre in West Village.
