Gay bingo was so last month. It’s all about gay bowling these days. The camp value of old women plunking down chips on bingo cards is downright geriatric compared with the kitsch factor of white-trash suburban couples in polyester shirts and borrowed shoes chunking swirly marble balls down the lanes at bowling pins. It was bound to happen with gays and lesbians proving how domestic they can be in the current battle for marriage equality. Plus there’s something not so subtly Freudian going on with those phallic pins. The gay guys like that there are 10 of them, and the lesbians like knocking them down perhaps? Find out the answer to this sociological conundrum at the Dallas-Fort Worth chapter of the National Coming Out Project’s Fruit Bowl 2005. Bowling expertise is optional, but costumes are not, because this year’s theme is A Fairytale Fruit Bowl, and prizes will be awarded to the team with the most creative uniforms. Groups are encouraged to register as teams of four, but if you’re flying solo or short a man or two, organizers will match you into complete teams (even though your costumes might not match). The Fruit Bowl takes place at Don Carter’s All Star Lanes West, 10920 Composite Drive, on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Registration is $25. In our elementary years, we always took the latest issue of Beckett’s Baseball Card Monthly to church. We hid the magazine beneath the pew, which was appropriate, because Beckett’s was our Bible–every card price a boy could ask for was tucked into the magazine’s comprehensive list. But that Nolan Ryan rookie card never fell to a value that our allowance could afford, so the subscription eventually ran out, but our prayers to the collector lords didn’t, which means we can still appreciate this weekend’s TRISTAR Collectors Show at the Arlington Convention Center, 1200 Ballpark Way. Get your cards ready for signatures from sports stars like Bill Parcells, Daryl “Moose” Johnston, Mike Modano and Lawrence Taylor. Entry is $10 for adults and $8 for kids.
