Who knew a little German shepherd went so well with a glass of French Cabernet? We’d never have paired a well-aged Siamese or domestic tabby with red wine either, but the folks at Operation Kindness sure do know how to serve their homeless animals. Besides, it’s for a good cause. The no-kill shelter’s Canines, Cats and Cabernet fund-raiser this Sunday aims to rack up loads of cash for our furry friends with silent and live auctions and wine-tasting. What, you thought we would actually endorse the consumption of helpless kitties and puppies? Please. The event’s hostess, TV’s Mattie Roberts, would never stand for such a thing. She’s too poised. And vegetarian Paul McCartney would probably revoke the $1,000 of his concert tickets from the auction if he found out. Are artists’ old works like their old embarrassing school photos? Is there a visual-art equivalent of ours from 20 years ago that featured a giant faux-pearl-covered headband and missing front tooth? We dare you to find one uncorrected overbite, out-of-control cowlick, waterfall bangs or spiral perm of an artwork among the pieces in the two-part retrospective exhibit, Twenty/Twenty, in which Barry Whistler splits 20 artists into two shows with each artist having his or her own retrospective within his gallery’s retrospective. Part one of Twenty/Twenty: A 20th Anniversary Exhibition in Two Parts opens with a reception from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. November 5 and runs through December 3. Part two is December 10 through January 14. America’s Next Top Model is my favorite show. The producers have done a masterful job of creating an exhilarating concoction of fashion, beauty, competition and, of course, reality TV’s slam dunk: gay fashionistas. And Tyra Banks deserves an Emmy for her ability to convey such sincerity as she instructs the girls on how one must “become your pose.” Oh, yes, I’m convinced that being a supermodel is hard, stressful work. In fact, I’m thanking my lucky stars right now that such misfortune did not befall me. But someone has to do it, and Dallas Fashion Industry Insiders is here to support the effort. On Saturday, DFII presents ReMix’D, a fashion show to benefit Fashion First (a scholarship fund created to help people pursuing a career in fashion) at Goss Gallery, 2500 Cedar Springs Road.
